This weekend one of my mechanical engineering graduates contacted me with some unexpected news.
He’d secured a role and had already completed his first week of work.
The surprise?
It was with a Tier 1 engineering company.
To be honest, that surprised me as well.
While I spend a lot of time encouraging graduates to target small and medium-sized engineering companies because they often provide more accessible opportunities, every year I still see a handful of graduates secure roles with major organisations.
This is the third time I’ve seen it happen this year.
The important lesson isn’t that everyone should suddenly chase Tier 1 companies.
The lesson is that good strategy creates opportunities in places you don’t always expect.
In this case, he also brought several years of engineering experience from the Middle East. That experience, combined with a structured approach to researching companies, contacting managers and positioning himself professionally, helped put him in the right place when the opportunity appeared.
You never know which door will open.
That’s why I keep telling graduates…
Keep positioning yourself.
Keep having conversations.
Keep following up.
The market often surprises those who stay consistent.
