Tips for International Graduates (Especially Engineers) Trying to Secure Work in Australia

AVOID THE GIANTS OF INDUSTRY

Over the past few weeks, I’ve spoken with several international graduates and engineers who’ve been looking for work some for more than 12 months.

Here’s a common theme I keep seeing
They’ve applied to hundreds of jobs…

But almost always to large companies.

And guess what? It rarely works.

Here’s what you need to understand:

A. Statistically, most of the graduates I’ve seen secure work didn’t get into big-name companies like Amazon, APA Group, Jemena, or Aurecon straight away.

They landed roles in smaller firms consultancies with 10 to 30 staff (sometimes even as small as 4–6 people).

Why?

✅ Because smaller companies often have immediate needs and are more flexible when it comes to hiring junior staff.

❌ They’re not running huge graduate programs. They’re simply looking for people who can contribute and grow.

If you’re applying to a big company but don’t understand the kind of work they actually do how will you feel confident in an interview?

It’s not about how perfect your resume is. It’s about how well you communicate:
👍 “Do you understand the work we do here?”
👍 Those who succeed always have a clear, confident, technical answer.
👍 Those who don’t, fall short even if they think they understand.

You might even know someone who got a job over you and feel, “But I know more than they do!”

But remember someone believed they were a better fit.
Chances are, they were clearer, more aligned with what the company wanted, and more confident in communicating that.

👉 Pro tip:
Using buzzwords like AutoCAD, SolidWorks, or FEA isn’t enough.
You need to explain how you’ve used those tools to solve a specific problem, and what value that brings to the company.

The bigger the company, the more complex their systems and expectations.

Most of them hire experienced staff or run structured graduate programs—because they know it’s hard for a junior to just “walk in and deliver.”
So here’s my advice:
Start with smaller companies

Learn the fundamentals

Understand the actual work being done

Practice communicating that clearly

Build confidence before you aim for the giants
