Tips for Graduate engineers
🚫 Don’t chase money. Chase skills.
Too many graduates particularly some of the Sub Asian male engineers I work with are making career decisions purely based on short-term salary gains. They jump between jobs every 3–6 months, thinking they’re being clever.
✅ But after 2–4 years, they realise:
They don’t have deep skills in any one area
They’re not productive or valuable to employers
They’re still seen as graduates – despite having “experience”
If you want to build a strong, respected engineering career especially in consultancy you need to stick it out for 5–7 years in one direction.
âś… Pick a sector:
Building services
Mining / oil & gas
Electrical design for Renewables, Wind solar around Sub stations
Electrical design with SCADA/PLC
Civil infrastructure / Rail / Land development / Buildings
Then stay put. Learn the basics.
Build depth. Become valuable.
đź’ˇ The big money comes later not from hopping jobs, but from mastering your craft.
