Done well, you will have a Job in no time what so ever and people will ask you how did you manage to do that.
Networking is subtle
It’s about: 2 parts (The mechanical stuff)
• Knowing WHO to contact
• Understanding HOW to approach people professionally
• Knowing WHAT questions to ask
• Knowing HOW to position yourself
The key is in how you communicate to others
The Timing and tone also matters
You might say you sound confident
• Learning WHEN to follow up
• Building trust over time
• Having a sense you need to do it
• Realising you should be doing it which creates a sense of confidence
Like all things done well you make it look effortless no different to
Someone who can play an instrument or dance
or someone singing a song, and hitting high notes,
then you try and realise, wow that is challenging
Some people run so fast over 100m they make it look easy
Some people like Messy from the Argentian footy team make it look effortless.
Ifs all the hours of practise you need to do to be successful.
That is why most engineers don’t like it, they don’t want to practise it,
but if you do, you take you career to whole new Level.
The graduates starting this process now on the GAP program will struggle in the first month.
That’s normal.
But if they stay consistent…
Eventually they begin turning the corner.
And suddenly…
They become the graduates getting interviews.
And then offers.
Networking is not luck.
It is a skill.
And like every skill…
It takes practice, like singing
They may not sing like Pavarotti
but they will handle themselves at work
