✅Struggling to Find Work? Key Career Lessons for International Engineers

Struggling to Secure Work? Here’s What I’ve Learned Through Life’s Challenges

Sometimes life throws unexpected challenges at us whether it’s health issues, family responsibilities, or other difficult circumstances.

From my own life experience, I’ve realised that when something tragic happens, it’s essential to reflect on:

✅ Why it happened
✅ What lessons can be learned
✅ How to apply those lessons moving forward

This morning, I spoke with an international engineer who had been unable to work for over 12 months due to a serious sports injury. He’s a single dad with a small family and has a lot of responsibilities.

Our conversation highlighted some key points that I believe are valuable for international graduates and engineers navigating their careers.

✅ 1. Health First, Wealth Follows

Without good health, you can’t create wealth.
It’s easy to focus solely on career progression, but neglecting your well-being can have long-term consequences. This engineer learned the hard way that good health is a foundation for professional success.

✅ 2. Take Time to Reflect at a Crossroads

If you’re at a career crossroads, take a few months or whatever time is needed to make better decisions.

✅ Pause and ask yourself:

Where am I now?
Where do I want to be in the next 5-10 years?
What steps do I need to take to get there?

✅ 3. Be Strategic in Your Career Planning Know Your ‘Why’

When considering a career path, especially after a setback, think carefully about:
👉 Where do you want to take your career?
👉 Why do you want to go in that direction?

Some examples:

✅ “I want to move into railway projects because…”
✅ “I’m interested in land development to gain more exposure to…”
✅ “I want to work on tailings dams or directional drilling for the following reasons…”
If you’re solely applying online, you’re reacting to the marketplace not taking control of your career.

✅ 4. Be Proactive in Defining Your Future Step Up and Take Control

No one accidentally becomes a general manager or CEO it happens because they’ve been working toward that goal for years.

When interviewers ask:
👉 “Where do you see yourself in 5-10 years?”
✅ You now know what to say.

✅ 5. Focus on the Type of Project Work You Aim to Do Over the Coming Years
Be clear about the types of projects you want to work on and consistently chip away at gaining experience in those areas.
Examples include:
Roads
Dams
Land development
Rail projects
🎯 Final Thought: Make Better Choices for Your Career and Life
✅ Remember: Success comes when you start making intentional choices about where you want to go.
