(And The Numbers Don’t Lie)
I have a young civil engineer in Tasmania.
She recently applied to 119 Civil engineering graduate programs across Australia, with a focus on Tasmania, she obviously looked to the main land as well.
Even if we 10 x that No = 1190 …that Number there is not enough graduate programs for everyone but if you tally up the total amount of projects going on, small, medium and large there would be enough to get most work.
Now ask yourself:
How many graduates are coming out of universities every single year?
Thousands at each university
So statistically…
How many people are fighting over a very small number of advertised positions?
Far too many.
And here is the uncomfortable truth.
A large percentage of these graduate programs heavily favour:
Australian Citizens
Permanent Residents
Why?
Simple.
It reduces applicant numbers dramatically.
Sometimes by 80–90%.
So what happens?
International graduates spend:
6 months applying
12 months waiting
18 months becoming frustrated
Confidence slowly disappearing
You are chasing something that may never happen.
Like trying to find the Tasmanian Tiger.
There is a much bigger market outside graduate programs.
A much bigger one.
But you have to stop looking where everyone else is looking.
