GET UNCOMFORTABLE TO GET COMFORTABLE

A tip for young engineers, international and domestic.

If you’re naturally introverted or technically focused, networking can feel incredibly awkward.

You’ve done your Bachelor’s. Maybe your Master’s. Maybe even a PhD.

You think:

I’ve done all this study. Why should I have to ring strangers and introduce myself just to find a job?

I understand the frustration.

But if applying online repeatedly isn’t producing results, at some point you have to give yourself permission to try something different.

Reach out directly.

Make the phone call.

Have the awkward conversation.

You might sound nervous.

You might stumble over your words.

The first few calls might be terrible.

That doesn’t matter.

Because one manager showing genuine interest in you can completely change your belief about what is possible.

An email is very easy to forget.

But if I’m a manager and I hear a young engineer nervously introducing themselves, asking sensible questions and genuinely trying to understand my business, I’m much more likely to remember them.

You’re not trying to be perfect.

You’re trying to become known.

And that only happens through repetition. One company isn’t networking.

Two phone calls a week isn’t really giving yourself much of a chance.

But 15–20 genuine conversations every week, continued for a month or two?

Now you’re creating opportunities.

You don’t become comfortable before you start.

You start uncomfortable.

And eventually, through practice, uncomfortable becomes normal.
