University gives you an engineering foundation.
It does not teach you everything required to enter mining, energy, food manufacturing, water or building services.
Each sector is fundamentally different.
If you want to work in mining, you need to understand mining equipment, operations, maintenance, shutdowns and projects.
If you want to work in energy, you need to understand generation, transmission, distribution, substations and the companies involved.
If you want to work in food manufacturing, you need to understand production lines, process equipment, utilities, maintenance, quality and compliance.
If you want to work in building services, you need to understand HVAC, electrical, fire, hydraulics, vertical transport and building codes.
You cannot learn every sector at once and you don’t need to.
You need to choose the areas that interest you and learn what is required to enter them.
That means doing additional work beyond university:
• Understand how the sector operates
• Learn the main equipment and systems
• Identify clients, consultants, contractors and vendors
• Understand the work performed by graduate engineers
• Learn the language used by people in that industry
• Practise explaining where you could contribute
You need to learn what is required now to secure the work later.
If you remain on the sideline waiting for someone to tap you on the shoulder and offer you a position, you may be waiting for a very long time.
More importantly The International Market has way more emphasis on the Education qualification then the Australian market does.
So we prefer work experience and probably less education so to speak.

You need lots of work experience in the ideal world
So keep this in Mind you need to apply yourself to industry and what is expected of you and if you don’t learn the rules, you will struggle to secure work.
