Tips for Securing work in Mechanical Engineering

I am asked daily by International Graduates in All disciplines how can I start my career?

So for this post, I will explain some of the issues Mechanical Graduates are facing but they are not aware off

Scenario 1: Let’s say you work during the day and at night you apply to a range of roles in Grad and Junior Mechanical engineering, HVAC, Mining, Manufacturing, Fire Water, Oil and Gas etc.

So this is usually what is happening behind the scenes:-

  1. Most people are applying to all the roles and most with little to no experience
  2. Some are for roles in Tier 1,2, and 3 Companies etc
  3. It’s purely online, there is little to no interaction with anyone at all, possibly an email response occasionally
  4. The Position descriptions are vague but they are jobs, but you are not really sure what they are, but if you get an interview, you will drill down into the details and resolve them later
  5. Most times you simply do not know what they want, but you feel you need to do something in your spare time, so you apply and hope for the best

Some things to consider:-

  1. In Mechanical I have narrowed it down to approximately 46 sectors, 5 mentioned above and another 41
  2. Each sector has certain requirements, Mining is different to HVAC, & Water sector & Biomedical etc
  3. Each graduate needs to realise specific knowledge needs to be known in the 46 sectors to get through an interview
  4. It’s impossible to know all sectors but it’s possible to learn something about 1-3 sectors
  5. In the GAP program, I address these issues
  6. Each EMPLOYER who is advertising is hoping to find someone with some experience in their sector to save time with training
  7. So if you look at the TOP scenario the probability of securing work with no knowledge of a sector is very low
  8. So apart from the mechanics of how to secure work you then need to factor in a few more key things
  9. Do you like what you have studied?
  10. Do you like the sectors you have identified and if so why?
  11. If you have a resounding Clear YES for the last two & you haven’t secured work its simply because you do not know anyone in the industry and this can be fixed within 2-3 months on the GAP program, if this is you contact me Asap because there is lots of workaround for those people
