Changing roles after 5-10 years of experience
Bringing value to a business
Over the years of discussing why people earn more money than others, it does boil down to bringing perceived value to your clients.
Specifically for the Engineers
- So if you can assist a new company in engineering complete projects they haven’t done before, you add value
- To clarify, if you can introduce your new engineering company to your previous clients because of your reputation, you bring value
- From my experience of studying what people pay for, it’s simple, they pay for someone with the right experience and reputation, which has been earned through hard work and effort; there are no shortcuts
- Simply wanting to become a project manager, for example, because you think you are good with people, does not command big bucks, but the delivery of projects consistently on schedule and budget over many years (not one project) will give you bargaining power and adds value to the business and to your career
- Adding value for some people means JOB security, not everyone wants to own and run a business, but they are happy to help grow a business, and naturally, if they help bring in work they expected to be looked after, JOB SECURITY means a regular pay cheque for some people
- So wrapping up, changing roles is healthy, but add value, network better with your clients and employers, become a better person be more understanding and supportive of each other not everything goes to plan, and support each other more through the good and not so good parts of project delivery and you will add value, and develop a great reputation, do not worry about money, it like water its finds its own level you will be paid what your worth or close to it
