Are you considering changing careers?
Over the past months, I have spoken to many people considering moving from their current position and want to know whether they should take the new role.
Here are some questions I would be asking myself
- Why am I applying for a new role? What is my underlying motivation? and prioritise them
- Am I looking for a new role because I am unhappy with the current role
- Am I valued and respected in my current role?
- Am I remunerated enough for this role?
- If I move onto a new role, consider that it’s like starting again; you need to impress the people around you and demonstrate to them you are good at what you do, and this can take years, providing you are not thrown into a sinking project, so be mindful of the project you will be working on
- Why did the last person leave this role?
- Does this Role add value to my resume?
- Does working at this company add value to my resume?
- Most people want to earn more money, which is a good thing; however, to earn more money you must bring more value to a company, people are paying for your experiences and knowledge, which is easily overlooked for a pay rise.
- If I take this position, where will I be in 3 years, what will I learn, and what value does it bring to me? If I move on from this employer, what new skills am I taking with me
Now, most people, who are just starting, will see so many things you believe should be changed in a company, such as GAPs in what they do etc., I have seen hundreds of professional people try to start businesses based on these GAPs, and they fail most times because often the GAP’s are communication issues easily fixed by training and coaching, so be careful
