TIPS FOR INTERNATIONAL ENGINEERS

When graduates first begin reaching out directly to engineering companies, most struggle immensely.

They send emails and quickly say:

“No one is responding.”
“No one wants to talk to me.”
“Nothing is working.”
My response is usually: “Yes—that is normal at the beginning.”

The problem is that graduates have been trained to follow the advertised-job process:

Find a vacancy on Seek or LinkedIn.
Upload a resume and cover letter.
Wait for an automated response.
Hope HR shortlists you.
Attend an interview if selected.

They then expect direct company outreach to follow the same process.

But it doesn’t.

When you contact a company that isn’t advertising, there may be no current vacancy, no HR process and no interview waiting to be booked.

You are starting a conversation about work that may arise in the future.

That means the first email is not necessarily supposed to produce an immediate interview.

Its purpose is to introduce you, create awareness and give you a reason to follow up.
This is why I tell graduates:

Until you begin speaking with people, very little changes.

The email opens the door.

The phone call begins the conversation.

The follow-up builds familiarity.

The opportunity may come later.

You are not applying for a job that already exists.

You are positioning yourself for work that may not be online yet.

That requires patience, preparation and a completely different mindset.
