You Cannot Sit on the Fence If You Want an Engineering Career

YOU CANNOT SIT ON THE FENCE

If you want to become an engineer, you have to participate in the process.

That means more than:

• Applying for advertised jobs
• Uploading another resume
• Sending a generic LinkedIn message
• Waiting for the employment market to improve

Participation means researching companies, understanding their work, identifying the right people, making telephone calls, following up and arranging genuine conversations.

Employers expect engineers to communicate.

They expect you to ask questions.

They expect you to understand what is required and take responsibility for your part of the work.

That expectation does not suddenly begin after you are employed.

Your employment search is already demonstrating whether you can communicate, prepare and take initiative.

This is particularly important for international graduates.

You cannot immigrate to Australia, complete an engineering qualification and then decide that talking to employers is something you are unwilling to do.

You will need to speak with people to secure work.

You will need to speak with people when you are doing the work.

Participation is not an optional part of an engineering career.

It is part of the profession.
