Sometimes the graduate engineering market slows down.

There may be fewer advertised jobs.

Companies may take longer to make decisions.

Certain sectors may be quieter than others.

That is all possible.

But one of the biggest mistakes you can make as a graduate is allowing a slower market to make you slower as well.

If you spend your week checking SEEK, LinkedIn and Indeed waiting for another graduate position to appear, you are allowing the market to dictate your activity.

Instead:

✅ Research companies.
✅ Understand the sectors they work in.
✅ Learn what those companies actually do.

Reach out to them
then
Pick up the phone.
and Follow up.
Have conversations.
Because even in a slower market, companies still win projects.

People still resign.
People with experience move between companies
People change careers
People retire
People start families and need time off

Projects still get delayed and then suddenly restart.

Managers still discover they need another engineer.

And smaller engineering companies don’t necessarily advertise every opportunity they have.

You don’t need the whole engineering market to be booming.

You need one company to need someone like you at the right time.

Your responsibility is to create enough conversations that eventually you find that company.

Research → Learn → Email → Call → Follow up → Meet.
