If you are an international engineering student, please understand this before you graduate:
There are not enough major graduate-program positions for everyone.
Many programs also prioritise Australian citizens and permanent residents.
Sometimes international graduates progress through several stages before discovering that their visa status makes them ineligible.
It is frustrating I know but ignoring it will NOT HELP
The real danger is spending six, twelve or eighteen months submitting endless online applications while doing very little else.
Applying through Seek and LinkedIn may be part of your strategy and its EASY
“Remember the saying if its too good to be true it often is”
It should not be your entire strategy.
Thousands of small and medium-sized engineering companies do not run formal graduate programs.
Many of them still need junior engineers who are willing to learn, support projects and grow with the business.
You need to find these companies.
You need to understand what they do.
You need to identify the engineering managers.
You need to email, call, follow up and create genuine conversations.
Your first role may not be with GHD, WSP, AECOM or another large TIER 1 organisations
That is perfectly fine.
You do not need the perfect first job.
You need the first opportunity that allows you to become an experienced engineer.
Don’t spend years waiting at the front door of the largest companies while hundreds of smaller doors remain unexplored.
