

Mechanical engineering design is not simply using cad software
When I ask mechanical engineering graduates about design, they often start listing software:
AutoCAD.
SolidWorks.
Revit.
MicroStation.
These are useful tools but operating design software is not the complete role of a mechanical engineer.
In many large engineering consultancies, such as WSP, Wood, AECOM or Aurecon, there are experienced (designers = drafters) who use these programs every day.
They may have an associate degree, an advanced diploma, a Bachelor of Technology or many years of practical drafting experience.
Because they work with the software continuously, they can often produce drawings much faster than a graduate engineer.
The mechanical engineer’s responsibility is broader.
The engineer must understand:
• What the client needs
• Why the modification is required
• How the existing plant operates
• What standards apply
• What equipment will be affected
• Whether the proposed design will remain safe and functional
• How the work will be constructed and installed
• How the modification will affect operations and maintenance
For example, a client may need new access platforms around several valves so that maintenance personnel can work safely.
The designer may model and detail the platforms in accordance with AS 1657.
The engineer must help define the scope, supply the necessary site information, coordinate the disciplines, review the proposed arrangement and ensure the completed design satisfies the client’s operational and technical requirements.
The software creates the drawing.
Engineering determines whether the solution will actually work.
That is the difference graduates need to understand.
