Another Qualification Will Not Replace Experience

If you have completed a Bachelor of Engineering and are now finishing a master’s degree but still have no relevant industry experience you need to treat this as urgent.

Australian employers want some indication that:

• You have experienced a professional engineering workplace
• You understand how projects are delivered
• You can communicate with engineers, clients and contractors
• You can complete useful work under supervision
• You genuinely understand and enjoy the sector
• You know what you are getting yourself into

NEXT make sure the experience must be genuine.

Standing near a project without contributing to it is not enough.

Neither is exaggerating your responsibilities and claiming that you “managed projects” when you were an inexperienced intern.

Useful undergraduate work might include:

• Updating drawings or technical documents
• Supporting inspections and site activities
• Reviewing specifications and standards
• Helping with quality documentation
• Obtaining vendor information or quotations
• Attending project meetings and recording actions

Start building that evidence before you graduate not after.

If you take the time however to develop your professional relationships, work will follow, and it’s easy to do even for a graduate.
