A Degree Doesn’t Automatically Make You Sound Like An Engineer

This may sound harsh, but it is something many graduates need to hear.

One graduate I recently worked with had been searching for an engineering role since 2023.

When I first met him, he had the qualifications but when he spoke about engineering work, he struggled to explain where he could contribute.

We worked on improving his general industry knowledge.

He completed a couple of relevant short courses so that

Six months later, he sounded completely different.

He could speak with context.
He could ask better questions.
He could explain what he wanted to learn.
He sounded like someone an engineering manager could imagine developing.
And he secured a role.

Your degree is important, but it is not the end of your preparation.

Ask yourself:
If an engineering called me today, could I hold a useful 10-minute conversation about their work?

If the answer is no, don’t be offended by the question.

Start building that ability.
